Is there a specific memory or event that you recall had a profound impact on you at Black Mountain College?
The great Japanese potter Hamada Shoji came for one summer. Every morning he’d go out to pick rushes to make a new brush for the day. There were a number of mornings when I hid and watched him do it. I didn’t think he saw me. But on his last day, he visited studios. When he came to mine, he told me he’d seen me and he called me a young master.
